OVERVIEW

The 991.2 Carrera was a stark departure from all previous Carreras. Porsche decided to move on from the naturally aspirated flat 6 engine in favor of a more modern power architecture. The 991.2 Carrera features a 3.0L flat 6 engine with twin turbos. Each exhaust bank is met with a turbocharger. Between the different versions of the Carrera, Porsche tweaked the turbo geometry and tuning profile accordingly. This modular high-tech engine architecture provides easy power enhancement through some basic bolt-on modifications and a proper tuning calibration. With several years of experience installing, testing, developing and tuning this platform, Flat 6 Motorsports has developed a 991.2 Carrera Power Kit Program. No matter if you're looking for a modest bump or a transformation in power delivery, we have proven solutions that maintain OEM-levels of reliability and daily driving compliance. 

PORSCHE'S 3.0L ENGINE

Developed for Power

The 9A2 engine featured in all 991.2 Carreras (and carried over with minor tweaks in the 992) is a robust power plant built for power. Porsche uses the exact same mechanical internals across the base, S and GTS models. The aluminum alloy block is lightweight but strengthen via 150 micron iron coated cylinder liners that utilize plasma wire transfer arc technology. Porsche integrated a forged crankshaft, rods and pistons providing a significantly stronger rotating assembly that is capable of handling higher levels of boost pressure.

The key differences between the base, S and GTS from the factory are the turbochargers and the tuning calibration. Fortunately, it is very easy to extract power from your existing turbo package or swap the turbos for an upgraded or larger set that can flow more air volume to the engine.

POWER KITS / IN DEPTH

450+ HP

Our Stage 1 Kit is capable of delivering 450HP on a base model, 490HP on the S and 530 HP on the GTS. This is the simplest and easiest way to increase power. We leverage the Cobb Accessport to install a new tuning calibration to your Carrera. The Cobb comes pre-loaded with maps for a variety of fuel octanes and is extremely easy to install. Simply plug into the OBD-II port, hit install and 15 minutes later your Carrera is transformed to a different beast. ECU tuning is a very safe and easy way for Carrera owners to increase power output and requires no additional hardware modifications. Additional power can be obtained by adding bolt-on modifications. 

480+ HP

Our Stage 2 Kit is capable of delivering 480HP on a base model, 520HP on the S and 560 HP on the GTS. This is a simple extension of the Stage 1 Power Kit but focuses on increasing airflow and air velocity in and out of the motor for improved power output. These simple modifications help the engine breath better, sort of like taking an N95 mask off after wearing one. It also improves the turbo response and improves the overall sound of the Carrera. We leverage the BMC High Flow Air Filter. Porsche utilizes the BMC High Flow Air Filters on the 991 GT3 RS and 918 models from the factory. Their more efficient filter media promote higher airflow into the engine. An optional modification is the IPD Plenum which helps promote higher air velocity to the engine and can enhance power further.

For our Stage 2 Power Kit, we recommend the AMS Intercooler Kit. This is the premier intercooler kit on the market and has everything in the kit including some nice carbon fiber shrouds that replace the factory plastic bits. These intercooler cores are 50% larger than the OEM intercoolers and allow for better heat dissipation which lowers the Intake Air Temperatures (IATs). This helps stabilize the intake charge temps making more power at greater efficiency. These are a must have for someone who tracks the vehicle or wants to add some additional cooling to the vehicle. On the exit of the turbo, we replace the factory link pipe that integrates a very dense and restrictive catalyst with a higher flowing design. This not only increases exhaust flow but it allows heat to extract off the turbochargers. These upgraded link pipes have a few options and considerations but reduce weight while increasing power and sound. With this change, you'll experience some more cracks and aggressive tones from the exhaust (particularly in sport/sport plus mode) without introducing resonance or drone to the cabin. If you are looking to enhance power a little more while adding more sound, we also offer a variety of muffler sections which provide an enhanced driving experience. We leverage similar tuning to the Stage 1 for recalibrating the engine but custom tuning is also available at this stage to fully optimize power delivery. 

530+ HP

Our Stage 3 Kit is only available for the base and S models because it swaps the base or S factory turbos with a new set of factory GTS turbos. This effectively converts the base or S Carrera to a GTS. We offer a turnkey solution for APR but can also support tuning via the Cobb Accessport. The larger GTS turbos actually share the same housings but the internals of the turbo are changed for larger turbine and compressor wheels. This makes the installation straight forward because they reuse all of the factory oil and coolant connections and require no hardware modifications. In addition, they are factory turbos so provide the same outstanding quality and durability of an OEM part. These GTS turbos have a 12% or 8% (for the base and S model respectively) larger turbine wheel and a 7% larger compressor wheel which allows a greater volume of air being compressed and forced into the engine. These are modest increases in turbo sizing so they still deliver similar power and boost characteristics which reduce turbo lag but obtain greater flow at higher RPMs allowing for more power at the top end of the powerband.

The boost pressure is also increased to add more power. The Stage 3 Power Kit is a very safe and reliable way to increase power output and requires no additional hardware modifications. This power level and set-up is the same as a GTS with a Stage 1 Tune. Additional power can be obtained by adding bolt-on modifications. The APR kit also supports e85 fuel for substantial power improvements over 91 or 93 octane fuel but will require PDK tuning to handle the torque requirements. 

600+ HP

Our Stage 3+ Kit builds on the baseline of the Stage 3 Kit but adds key hardware/supporting modifications and custom tuning to exploit the power potential of the GTS turbos. With the GTS turbos in place, we leverage the BMC High Flow Air Filter. Porsche utilizes the BMC High Flow Air Filters on the 991 GT3 RS and 918 models from the factory. Their more efficient filter media promote higher airflow into the engine. An optional modification is the IPD Plenum which helps promote higher air velocity to the engine and can enhance power further. For our Stage 3+ Power Kit, we recommend the AMS Intercooler Kit. Tying this all together, we partner with ByDesign, the most experienced and leading tuning calibrator in the 911.2 Carrera and 991 Turbo models. With years of co-development on many builds, the tuning will bring the full potential of this set-up to fruition while maintaining high-reliability and daily driving capability. We recommend utilizing the Cobb PDK tune as well to help optimize the transmission for the larger power output. While not required, it will sharpen the driving experience and reduce shift times out of the already impressive PDK dual clutch transmission. Our Stage 3+ Power Kit delivers extremely similar power to a 991 Turbo with the same bolt-ons and tuning. Compared to a stock base Carrera, you will reduce your 0-60MPH figure by 0.8 seconds, drop 1.5 seconds off the quarter mile run while your trap speed increases by 15MPH! These are impressive results that transform the dynamics of the vehicle. 

675+ HP

Our Stage 4 Kit builds on many of the same modifications of the Stage 3+ formula but the turbochargers are swapped for upgraded units from Pure Turbos or TiAL Sport. These upgraded turbos utilize a factory housing, so just like swapping to the GTS turbos, these bolt up the same way and reuse all of the OEM components making it a straightforward install. The upgraded turbochargers are machined out and the turbine and compressor wheel cartridges are replaced with larger units that are CNC-machined out of aerospace grade billet aluminum. These units improve the strength and durability of the turbos while promoting higher flow. These turbos will make more power than the GTS turbos because of the sizing and wheel designs. The benefit of reusing the factory housing is you maintain very similar turbo spooling characteristic. So turbo lag is similar to the vehicle stock but the flow rate on the turbos allow for substantial power increases. With the upgraded turbos in place, we leverage the BMC High Flow Air Filter. Porsche utilizes the BMC High Flow Air Filters on the 991 GT3 RS and 918 models from the factory. Their more efficient filter media promote higher airflow into the engine. This tune will sharpen the driving experience and reduce shift times out of the already impressive PDK dual clutch transmission. Our Stage 4 Power Kit delivers extremely impressive power output while maintaining high reliability and a daily drivable experience. While there are some opportunities to increase power further, we recommend exercising restraint with the power levels to preserve the reliability of the PDK transmission. While higher output is possible, it begins to stress components of the transmission and starts to trip fail safes that can cause faults and issues with the PDK transmission. This doesn't effect manual transmission vehicles but an upgraded clutch will be required to obtain higher power levels.
